HOW TO BUILD A SLAB COILED CERAMIC CUP

In this tutorial you will learn a slab coiling hand building technique that you can use to build an endless number of forms. This is a highly accessible process that you can easily do at home on your kitchen table.

I welcome you to come and join me in the studio and I’ll show you how to hand-build a cup using a slab coiling method. This process is extremely versatile and can be used to build pieces of all shapes and sizes. I love the organic and irregular forms you can achieve while making this way.

This is quite a casual tutorial... You'll see I get a few visitors during this making session, and I didn’t edit them out for this one. You'll get a little glimpse into my studio life! ;)

Before this was filmed I rolled out an even slab, approximately 0.25 inches thick. I then cut the clay into strips about 1.5" wide ready to build, but you can make them any width that feels comfortable for your fingers to pinch. If you need more help/ tips with the hand slab rolling process please let me know, and if there’s enough interest I may make a little video on that. I also added a coil handle to this babe in the end, and then some lovely glazes after the bisque fire.

This was the first video I posted on this platform and was intended to act as a bit of a tester for this process, so I appreciate you being forgiving of any imperfections and I intend to get better at this as I go!
